Yangon University stands at 7221 in the rankings of global universities, said Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi.
The minister disclosed the information during the 100th anniversary of Yangon University held in December 2.
In the rankings, Myanmar ranked 13072 in 2016, 9619 in 2017, 8726 in 2018 and 7221 this year (2019).
State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi had said that a master plan is being drawn to upgrade Yangon University.
For the implementation of said master plan, a Steering Committee chaired by the minister, Software Committee, Hardware Committee and University Charter Committee have been formed.
The State Counsellor said as per the national education law enacted in 2015, Yangon University is taking all necessary measures to be entitled to self management.
The measures include reviewing and upgrading curriculums and syllabuses and drawing new ones for the university in seeking cooperation with international universities.
The centenary celebration period of Yangon University will be from December 2 this year to December 31, 2020.
Yangon University was founded in 1920. Formerly, it was called University College and Judson College. In the 1940s and 1950s, Yangon University was the best in Southeast Asia.
After the 8888 uprising, Yangon University was shut down and post graduate courses were opened in 2013.
